from some sort of field in the psycho-realm..........

Earlier this week I walked alongside a stretch of the River Roding from a bridge at Snakes Lane East (Chigwell) to some sort of field near Royston Gardens and the Redbridge Roundabout. I write, 'some sort of field' because, by the time I reached that place, having attempted to keep to the way-markers of the Roding Valley Way, I was partially lost. The footpath petered out into a field of bramble briars, blackthorn spinneys and stumbling tussocks of couch grass. I moved awkwardly through them. The prickling scrambling shrubbery teased and pestered me, as if to punish me for my trespass and my foolish straying from the path. I was determined not to turn back and leave by the way I had entered. Initially, despite my loss of the Roding Valley Way, I was confident I would find a path across the field and reconnect with the River Roding and Wanstead Park. The A406 maintained a rushing and (temporarily) reassuring presence to my left, the east. There was, I thought, time and light en

Field Study's Man in E11 explores the interests of children in the redevelopment of Utopia via the M11 Link Road

I returned to the London Borough of Waltham Forest Archives and Local Studies Library on 8 th November to continue looking through the collection of local newspaper reports about the building of the A12/M11 Link Road. One of the articles concerns how central government (then Conservative) acted in order to protect its local interests, i.e. the safety of constituency seats, while still pushing ahead with national policies which were unpopular on a local level; new road building being one of them. DON’T LOOK AT ME: JENKIN. Extra Series, 4/9/1984 – reports on Patrick Jenkin ’s denial that he had a hand in deciding the controversial route of the South Woodford to Barking Relief Road . Patrick Jenkin, MP (Environment Secretary) decided to ask Ian Gow, MP (Minister for Housing & Construction) to reach a decision on his behalf, regarding road building in and near his constituency of Wanstead and Woodford. 30 years later, who has benefited from those decisions and various co

Field 4th November 2014 Romford Road, near Forest Gate - my attention was caught by the sight of the large blue screen and the mysterious silhouetted activities going on behind it. I stopped briefly to watch, photograph and film the events and before leaving I asked another bystander what the occasion was. He told me the occasion was part of a day of mourning for the martyr, Imam Hussein ibn Ali. I found this information on Wikipedia for the 'Mourning of Muharram'. Romford Road - 4th November 2014

Saturday 25 th October 2014 - After a long morning sitting at a table delving into an archive relating to the building of the A12/M11 Link Road I needed to stretch my legs and so I set out on a walk; one which would include some of the locations recorded in the various historical documents I was given by the archivist. There were a lot of documents and I did not have enough time to fully read through all of them. My initial visit was about getting a general idea of what was available rather than making a more detailed exploration of the archived local history. In the three hours I spent at the archive I made a brief note of each document I looked at. One such document was a copy of a report made by the: ‘Remembrancer/Superintendent of Epping Forest’ Ref’ no. PD/MY/SEF55/92/REM/44 Date of Report – 5/10/92 Subject – City of London (Various Powers) Act 1990 – Exchange (of?) Land The report, according to my brief reading and notes, concerns land exchanges made beca

Field Study's Man in E11 reflects on the loss of local Utopian history repeating itself

Until today it was 5 years since I last did Graeme Miller’s ‘Linked’ walk. ‘Linked’ is an audio art installation situated alongside the route of the A12/M11 Link Road. The installation was created in 2003 and is frequently presented as a permanent public art work. Access to the audio element of ‘Linked’ requires the use of bespoke listening equipment. The equipment is, according to various sources, freely available to borrow from some local libraries, museums and the commissioning organisations, Arts Admin and Museum of London. 5 years ago (‘Linked’ then being 6 years old) I experienced some difficulties obtaining the listening equipment from the local libraries. Most of the library staff had no knowledge or awareness of the equipment or the art work, and they were, sometimes to my annoyance, quick to dismiss my enquiries as misguided. I did, eventually, manage to get a listening pack from Vestry House Museum after a protracted enquiry involving several members of staff of whom ju
